So you took the online LTC class. What’s next?

Well, you must now complete the range proficiency demonstration that consists of 1 to 2 hours of instruction with a state-certified LTC instructor. Upon successful completion of the range instruction, you will receive the required instructor endorsement on your LTC-101 certificate of training necessary to submit with your application for your handgun license. The cost for the range instruction varies widely among the many different instructors.

For us here at RW Defense, we take having the license to carry a handgun very seriously and want to ensure you know how to use it properly to defend yourself if the need arises. It is extremely important that in a defensive encounter, you are able to stop the attacker and not hit any innocent bystanders. So here is our approach.

What to Expect:

• Texas requires that you complete 1-2 hours of instruction on the range in firearms safety and gun handling. We add in the fundamentals of basic marksmanship before shooting the qualification course of fire (COF).
• We start with a range safety briefing, show you the handgun’s essential operation and how to load, unload, rack the slide to insert a fresh cartridge, and how to clear malfunctions.
• We then show you proper stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and managing recoil. We focus heavily on aiming and proper manipulation of the trigger to increase accuracy.
• Next, you will fire a skill assessment drill of 5 shots into a 5-inch circle on a target at 3-yds.
• We then progress from there, making any necessary adjustments to grip, stance, etc.
• Expect to fire up to 50 rounds of ammunition during this training phase.
• Once we see that you can safely load, unload, and fire the gun accurately, we then have you shoot the qualifying COF on the standard B-27 target.

What to Bring:

  • Your State driver’s license or State ID.
  • A printed copy of your LTC-101, or email me an original .pdf of the LTC-101 that you downloaded from TexasCarryAcademy (you can access the download function on the website for 180 days after the class).  We prefer the .pdf emailed; otherwise, you will experience a delay in receipt of your fully endorsed LTC-101 certificate of training.
  • One hundred rounds of quality ammunition for the firearm that you are using.
  • A handgun .22 caliber or greater.  It must be in safe working order and fully functioning.  Our instructor has the right to refuse the use of any handgun that is deemed unsafe.
  • Electronic hearing protection
  • Eye protection
  • You will also need to have closed-toe shoes and a button-up collar shirt that helps prevent hot expended cartridge casings on exposed skin, causing a safety issue.
  • You should also have a hat, jacket, or clothing items necessary for the weather.

We hope to see you in a class soon. Contact if you have any questions or need additional information.
